Updates, reviews, and flying monkeys

Ok, there are no flying monkeys. I just wanted to see if you were paying attention.

torchy and thoemeringue came over for dinner on Thursday night. It was a hell of a lot of fun. I met Torchy on the Bad Girl Swirl board, and have been talking to her for the better part of a year. I introduced her to Thoemeringue (who used to give me a lot of shit for the number of Swirlers I chatted with during the day…of course, that DID end up causing drama…one more in the right column for Eve). They hit it off really well, and so Torchy came up to stay with her for the weekend after a hellish conference in Miami.

Torchy is an awesome person, and one of my friends who likes me enough to not bullshit me and tell it to me straight when she thinks I’m doing something stupid. So are Thoemeringue and ross_winn. They were all here on Thursday. They decided to turn their attention on my behavior in the last few months.

It sucked. It was highly embarassing.

But they were right.

I’m not going to solve anything with sex, and I’m not making myself any happier by having the meaningless kind.

I think I’m done for a while.

I gave up the alcohol. Bought wine for Thursday night. Had none. Went to the Castle last night with depotmode. Drank a Red Bull. Danced my bald ass off. Saw Patti/Trish. Met some friends of Chris’ who I know I’ve met somewhere before (help me out gang…anyone in the Rennie crowd named Andy who has an older husband named Steve? Really cool gothy girl who lives in New Port Richey?). Remembered that is is ok to go out and not drink.

So I can give up meaningless sex and the pursuit of it.

I think.

Maybe I need to get that book from Misha.

Ok, so anyway…

I got an email from a friend who recently discovered my journal, found something I wrote about her, and took great offense at it. I’m incredibly bummed out about this. For one, the context of what I wrote is not the way she interpreted it, but I didn’t really make that abundantly clear in the posting. I also made some assumptions about my readers (that they knew certain facts about her) that are not necessarily the case, and thus would make her look much worse than the actually is. I’d get more specific, but I think the sheer fact that I wrote about her at all was also an issue. I wrote her back. Apologized. Explained what I meant when I said what I said. Haven’t heard back from her.

And thus, the “Live Journal is Evil” theory has more evidence thrown in to support it.

I’m a jobless bum this weekend, and I’m acting like it. Fair warning. Nothing will be accomplished between now and Sunday night.

Oh, except for laundry…and I have to change my sheets out and wash them…do some dishes…DAMNIT

Alright. Now. I went to see X-Men 2 with depotmode, dawaioser, donwaughesq and Laura (my roommate’s co-worker). ross_winn and his son John were supposed to go, but he got called in to work. I tried really hard to convince John to stay with me to see the movie, but he wanted his dad to stay. He was not accepting the “go home, or stay here with Mike” choice. The ONLY choice in John’s world was “Dad stays and we all see the movie.” Which I honestly would have preferred myself, but I understand why he left. Still, it absolutely broke my heart to see John crying as Ross walked away with him. Can’t imagine it was any easier for him.

Sometimes being a parent and making the firm decisions really sucks ass.

Due to an emergency with a friend, Ross brought John over here to sleep on Thursday night. I thought he would pick him up and take him home when he was done, but when I woke up on Friday they were both sleeping in Alex’s bed. It was one of the cutest things I have ever seen in my life. I took pictures of it for hel_ana. They didn’t come out so hot, but the general purpose of my taking them was achieved (she got to see her two favorite men in a completely natural setting, at the exact moment that they were in it).

I am now going to put my thoughts on X-Men 2 in my journal. These thoughts are going to be laced with fan-boy orgasms and HUGE spoilers for not only this move but quite possibly the next one. If you haven’t seen this one, and want NO clue as to what is going to happen in the next one, do NOT look behind the cut.

Wow. You know, I don’t even know that I can give a coherent review of the acutal movie. I just feel like I’ll devolve into raving “it was amazing” nonsene. It was better than the first one. How often can you say that? I’m even thinking it was better than Spider-Man, but I think the second Spider-Man movie will do the same thing. Here’s what is happening, folks. They are making the movies close together. They are sticking with the same teams who create them. They improve upon the good things that they did in the first one. In other words, I think the people behind them really CARE ABOUT MAKING A GOOD PRODUCT.

And it’s making lots of money.

So the film studios are supporting them.

God I hope they don’t fuck it up.

But anyway…thoughts on this movie…

Storm – Bigger role, much more fleshed out. Even starting to see some of the “punk” Storm that was around in the 80’s. Halle Berry with a white mohawk? It could happen. (Ok, guys…for those of you who HAVEN’T read the comics…There was a period when Storm, who had been treated as a literal goddess in her homeland, got very jaded and fed up with the world. She gave herself a mohawk, and basically started being a very careless person. During this time, she lost her powers. She still managed to outwit Cyclops in the danger room and become leader of the X-Men. She’s a total badass)

Cyclops – Still a whiny bitch. Less said about him the better. Totally makes no sense why Jean would choose him. I guess he was this way in the comics, but I never really saw it until now.

Rogue – Smaller part, which is good. They totally fucked this character, in my humble opinion, so until they get her more in line with Marvel continuity they can keep her hidden away.

Iceman and Pyro – Still not too keen on Bobby not being one of the older X-Men, but the interaction between him and his family was very powerful. Pyro? Oh yeah. Very cool that they showed his turn to the dark side.

Professor X and Magneto – Do I even have to say it? These men are gods.

Mystique – Oh yeah. MAJOR improvement on the character. Gave her a personality, showed some of why she’s got the evil vibe going on, and gave her a good sense of humor. Oh yeah, and she’s still hot. I’m very pleased with how they fleshed her out in this movie.

Nightcrawler – Alan Cumming. Good lord. This man can do no wrong. And the character is almost identical to the comics. The way he fights, teleports, acts…Perfect. I also like the fact that they included Kurt’s religious beliefs. They were always central to the character in the books as well, and one of the more poignant messages his creators were trying to get across (man who looks like a devil being devoutly religious).

Wolverine – More snickitty snickt goodness. Hugh Jackman was a perfect choice for this part. Really. I know I was on the Glen Danzig band wagon a while ago, but who knows if that man can act? His flashbacks to when he was laced with adamantium and the horror afterwards. Chills, my friends. Many more shining moments of the Wolverine dry wit, as well. “What are you a Professor of?” “Art.” And his reaction of “Well shit” when meeting….

Lady Deathstrike – Well
, other than the fact that she had no dialogue and died in this movie, she was pretty cool. And totally fucked Wolvy’s world. Could have killed him, too. In fact, it was Mystique who, in the comics, came to the conclusion that if you could make Wolverine bleed to death faster than he could heal it would do the trick.

Colossus – Yes, I know he was only there for a few moments and that it was literally thrown in at the last minute, but hot damn tamale it was awesome watching Peter go into action. I REALLY hope they include him in the next movie.

Jean Grey – Why did I leave this seemingly normal unassuming person for last? For one, I thought she was acted very well. More importantly? DARK MOTHER FUCKING PHOENIX, BABY. Before the movie started, Don asked me what I thought the next film was going to be about. I said, not knowing ANYTHING about this one, that it should be the Dark Phoenix story. Sure as shit, they’re going to do it. Or it looks like it, anyway. I’m more excited about finding out what happens next than I think I have ever been over a movie. That’s saying something. I wanted to see either Phoenix or The Sentinels in the next movie. As it looks like they are going to calm down the anti-mutant stuff in the next movie, I may not ever get to see my Sentinels. If I do, though, they damn well better get me some Colossus/Wolverine Fastball specials going on (for those of you who don’t read the comics…Colossus would throw Wolverine at people).

Bottom line? I loved it. Brilliant. Go see it. A lot. Drag your mother to it. She’ll love it too.

Off to be a bum now.
