It appears as though the battle for supremacy in the exergame field continues! Not content to sit back and let EA SPORTS Active steal all the thunder when it comes to fitness gaming, Nintendo recently announced an expansion to the popular Wii Fit title during the E3 conference in Los Angeles, California.
The appropriately named Wii Fit Plus is scheduled to be released this Fall in time for the Holiday shopping season. Available as a complete package with the Wii Balance Board or as a stand-alone expansion for those who already own Wii Fit, Wii Fit Plus includes all the exercises of the original game along with 15 new balance games and six new yoga and strength training activities.
As a current user of Wii Fit what makes me personally interested in this expansion to the franchise is the inclusion of several features outside of the actual exercises themselves. My primary complaint about Wii Fit has always been the fact that you had to select your exercises as you progressed through your workout and that there weren’t any set routines for you to choose from that targeted specific areas of your body. This is particularly frustrating if you’re trying to maintain an elevated heart rate during your daily exercise. It appears as though I was not alone in voicing that complaint as Nintendo is adding in the ability to either select a daily focus and have Wii Fit Plus build a workout for you, or build your own workouts before you begin so that you do not need to pause between every exercise to select a new one. Wii Fit Plus will also include the ability for you to estimate how many calories you burn during your daily workouts.
For some reason they are also including the ability for you to weigh your pets, too. I’m not quite sure what that particular feature has to do with getting fit but, hey, whatever works I suppose.

Excellent.
I picked up EA Active and was using it before the gout flare up. I like lots of the ‘other’ stuff; notably not having to pick each exercise but am not wowed by the graphics and feel the motion sensing is weirdly picky (I’d be running at the same pace but my avatar would slow to a crawl then suddenly sprint; it would double-punch during boxing.)
Maybe the whole ‘weigh your pets’ thing is Nintendo’s way of cashing in on purse dogs? Sort of like the ‘attach the pedometer to your dogs’ collar.’
