According to Chicago Tribune columnist Mary Schmich there we must all accept that there are certain inalienable truths :  Prices will rise.  Politicians will philander.  You, too, will get old (and when you do you’ll fantasize that when you were young prices were reasonable, politicians were noble, and children respected their elders).

Oh, and Pie is greater than Cake.

Not many people are aware that Ms. Schmich included that in her original column.  Unfortunately that line was omitted from the printed article by a delusional cake loving typesetter named Gladys who worked for the printers.  It’s true.  My wife told me.  My wife….Morgan Fairchild!  Yeah, that’s the ticket!

Ok, all kidding aside I have really, really love pie.  Chocolate Satin, Pecan, Turtle…I could go on and on.  Even something as simple as a good old fashioned warm slice of Apple Pie with a scoop of vanilla ice cream is enough to send me into fits of dessert-induced ecstacy.  The problem, of course, is that as a general rule pie isn’t necessarily the most diet-friendly food on the market.  While I’m a big proponent of the fact that “you can eat anything you want as long as you do it in moderation” lifestyle, having a full calorie Original Pie Pie (link is NSFETPL – Not Safe For Easily Tempted Pie Lovers)  sitting on your counter is a temptation that is incredibly hard to pass up.

So what’s a Pie lover like to do?  Perhaps you should try one of these Low Calorie Pie Recipes.   There’s a whole slew of delicious sounding no-bake pie recipes on this site, from traditional staples like Key Lime and Boston Cream to some interesting new tastes like Banana Fo-Fanna and Candy Bar.  All of the recipes have nutrition information available so that you can track exactly how many calories you’re taking in as well!

Me, personally?  I seriously want to try out the Peanut Butter Pie (don’t get me started on my Peanut Butter obsession).

  1. Okay. Now we’re talking pie. I can get behind this diet initiative.

    I’ve been doing the faux-key lime before at home already, and it is tasty. I don’t bother with the official crust, just crack open a container of Yoplait Whips Key Lime (about 110 calories), spoon on top of a low-fat graham cracker, and top with a wee dollop of sugar-free whipped topping.

    No, it’s not the Margaritaville Key Lime pie that I have dreams about, but it’s a satisfying and fairly healthy dessert with some nutritional value.

    I’m definitely going to try their Pecan Angel Pie- I think I can get their calorie count even lower by substituting the Brown Sugar Splenda baking blend. Mmm. Pie!

  2. I was at a vegan restaurant with three friends one night. We saw that they had some sort of vegan pie but we were all watching our belts. So we decided to order one slice. That’s it, one.

    We each took a few bites until it was done. Ended up satisfying our sweet tooth while not pushing our dieting rules, or stomachs, to the brink.

    I have now become quite the fan of splitting dessert and even full meals at times. Gets in the special food without taking in the giant portions that restaurants serve. Instead of having to skip on the pie because of the large meal I just had, I can easily split the pie since I split the meal. And still have room for coffee. 🙂
